Tesla Hits Deer Without Stopping, Toyota SEMAs A 4Runner And Scout Unveils EV Trucks In This Week's Car Culture Roundup
A collection of our best posts of the week in car culture
Tesla’s approach to automotive autonomy is a unique one: Rather than using pesky sensors, which cost money, the company has instead decided to rely only on the output from the car’s cameras. Its computers analyze every pixel, crunch through tons of data, and then apparently decide to just plow into deer and keep on trucking. - Amber DaSilva Read More

Toyota Goes Old School With A Two-Door 4Runner Concept That’s A Tribute To California’s Surf Culture
The redesigned 2025 Toyota 4Runner has yet to arrive at dealerships, but that hasn’t stopped Toyota from doing up a rad concept for this year’s SEMA show that kicks off in just a couple weeks. Called the 4Runner TRD Surf, it calls back to the Hilux Surf that was offered in Japan back in the 1980s, and we have a feeling you’re going to be yelling at Toyota to make this. - Lawrence Hodge Read More

The reborn Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors unveiled its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV concepts last week; a pair of new EVs that will be available with a unique range-extender powertrain when they enter production in South Carolina in 2027. I was able to get up close and personal with the Terra and Traveler following the reveal at a beautiful ranch outside Nashville, and while I couldn’t sit inside or touch anything myself (these are very much just show car models), I captured plenty of photos of the best design details to share with our beloved readers. - Daniel Golson Read More

The long and storied tradition of American hot rodding more or less boils down to “put big car motor in smaller car” and for over 70 years it’s been working like a charm. There’s no reason the old-school way of making a muscle car can’t work in the EV era, too. General Motors is finally working its way toward building some pretty competent electric vehicles, and it has a few options to choose from when it comes to building the ultimate electric luxury muscle crossover. With the announcement of the Lyriq-V coming to the market next year, I would like to offer Cadillac some advice. - Bradley Brownell Read More
Who doesn’t love a good fart joke? I know the French do. Well, at least I think they do, because there’s no way this wasn’t intentional (please ignore the fact that they speak French). It has come to my attention that one of the Renault Avantime’s engine choices, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor, was codenamed the F4Rt. The goddamn car is powered by the fart motor, and that’s somehow not the weirdest thing it has going for it. - Andy Kalmowitz Read More
Kapan’s keitora class of compact trucks are an interesting breed of vehicles. They look like you could pick them up and pop them in your pocket, while also offering a decent amount of hauling capacity, which is something all Americans need, right? But if you don’t need to haul around your hopes and dreams and instead just want to go stupid fast, then the kei truck might also be a good bet, provided you have a spare jet engine lying around. - Owen Bellwood Read More
