Check Out The Coolest Design Details On Scout's New Electric Truck And SUV Concepts
The Terra pickup and Traveler SUV are full of interesting design elements and clever features
The reborn Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors unveiled its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV concepts last week; a pair of new EVs that will be available with a unique range-extender powertrain when they enter production in South Carolina in 2027. I was able to get up close and personal with the Terra and Traveler following the reveal at a beautiful ranch outside Nashville, and while I couldn't sit inside or touch anything myself (these are very much just show car models), I captured plenty of photos of the best design details to share with our beloved readers.

Headlights
Some people online are disappointed that the Scouts don't have round headlights, but there were a lot of old Scouts with rectangular ones, and I think the new lights look great. The inner elements are complex and interesting, and I especially love the center bar that extends to form the side marker on the fenders. The lights that fully wrap around the black mask with a gear-like outline really enhances the look at night.
Taillights
The taillights also look awesome.
Classic Badging With A Twist
I love that the Scout script is illuminated, and that it's an actual three-dimensional piece placed onto the mask.
More Badges
This subtle S roundel is found in places like the swing-out spare tire carrier and on the seatbacks.
Big Tires
The Scouts will be available with 35-inch all-terrain tires, putting them in an elite club of serious off-roaders that offer such rubber from the factory.
Tow Hooks
Scout CEO Scott Keogh is an avid rock climber, and lead designer Chris Benjamin explained he was the inspiration to add these small holes to the front and rear tow hooks that are big enough to thread a rope through, so you can use your Scout as an anchor.
Hood Hooks
The hoods have these nicely sculpted tie-down hooks, too.
Door Handles
The Scouts have legit chunky door handles designed to be easy to grab when wearing work gloves, and they have a nice illuminated surround.
Grab Handles
The Terra has these slick grab handles aft of each C-pillar, and the design mirrors the kicked-up window line in the rear doors.
Charge Port
The charge port also has a bunch of power outlets within it, and I like that the side marker light is still visible even with the flap open.
Fuel Filler
If you go for the range-extender option, which puts a small gas engine between the rear axle and rear bumper, your Scout will gain a fuel filler flap on the passenger side front fender. Just like a Porsche 911!
Big Bed
The Terra's 5-foot-5-inch bed is a foot longer than what you get in a Rivian R1T and matches the F-150 Lightning's in size. The bed has some cool horizontal line design elements, and a wraparound bar with mounting points for all sorts of gear that you'll see in other places throughout the Scouts. It's nice to see that the wheels barely take up any space in the bed, too.
Huge Rear Window
Look how gigantic that rear window is! It's gotta be the biggest one of any truck out there, and it looks like the main center section will roll down. Hopefully the production truck maintains it.
Frunk
The frunk has a slide-out panel in the floor that you can sit on, a pair of cupholders, power outlets and an air compressor, plus another one of those gear racks.
Split Tailgate
The Traveler has a split tailgate that opens to reveal a massive cargo area. This thing is almost as long as a Chevy Tahoe, but it's only got two rows of seats so there's a ton of space for your stuff. The rear seats fold flat, and there's a big gear rack on each side. Below you can see an example of what sort of stuff can be attached to those racks.
Real Physical Controls!
Don't get me wrong, I love a good touchscreen, but it does make a lot of sense for a rugged truck like the Scout to have a plethora of nicely laid-out physical controls. I really love the retro design of the steering wheel, too.
Bench Seat!
Available on both Scouts (and in higher trim levels too) will be a front bench seat, an extreme rarity in the car industry these days. Unlike the bench seats in things like the Land Rover Defender and other trucks, the middle seat in the Scout looks plenty spacious and comfortable, and there's no pesky transmission tunnel or protruding dashboard or center console that takes up legroom. And check out the cool plaid seat perforation pattern!
Seat Details
The Traveler on display had a rad mix of leather and recycled fabric, and the seats have high-end details like aluminum accents and contrasting stitching.
More Gear Racks
The front seatbacks also have those gear racks, and there are air vents, climate controls and power outlets too.
Door Cards
The door cards look great too, with sizable grab handles and big storage pockets with a fabric strap to keep items secure.
More Seat Details
Even the seat bases are well designed and interesting, and the power seat controls are also chunky.
Roof Controls
More cars need roof-mounted controls for more than just lights and sunroofs. The Scouts have switches for the mechanical lockers and other off-road functions, plus a really cool integrated compass.
