Okay, we knew this was happening, but we're still jazzed about it. In a speech to investors yesterday, Volkswagen Group chairman Martin Winterkorn confirmed that a new Porsche Boxster Spyder will debut this year. And it will probably be the Boxster you want.
Car and Driver and other outlets confirmed Dr. Winterkorn's statement, but sadly he offered no additional details about the new Spyder. The Cayman and Boxster both have new replacements due out in the next few years (packing flat four turbo power) so now we're starting to see the cool special editions trickle out.
The last Boxster Spyder, pictured above, was a real gem. The one we tested in 2010 was 176 pounds lighter than a normal Boxster, thanks to a super-thin DIY canvas roof and aluminum doors, and it packed 10 horsepower over the standard Boxster S. It took a nearly perfect sports car and made it even more perfect.
So I'm thrilled to see what the Spyder treatment will do to the 981 Boxster, which is an even more phenomenal car than the last one. Between this, the 911 GT3 and the Cayman GT4, Porsche is making its fans very happy these days.
