Nokia is the latest manufacturer to try its hand into the traffic tracking and communication area. Unlike the other methods, Nokia's traffic shenanigans uses an existing gadget: your GPS-enabled Nokia cellphone.
The Nokia project is called "Mobile Century." The project was tested in California with the help of 100 UC Berkeley students. Nokia says it compares to the traffic monitoring systems offered by XM, Sirius, Google and Yahoo. It works by monitoring and sending out data regarding speed and position to other phones in the network.

Reports indicate that Nokia is aggressively pushing this project, so it may be coming to a cellphone and vehicle near you soon. [CNET via Gizmodo AU]
