Late last week, Mitsubishi signed an agreement to supply DaimlerChrysler's Smart division with thousands of rubber bands to power the 2007 replacement of Smart's fortwo minicar. (That rubber-band engine joke never almost never gets old.) The nonetheless moto-like 1.0-liter MIVEC powerplants are a legacy of Mitsu's i concept minicar, first seen at the 2003 Tokyo motor show.
