March Muscle Car Madness: Round Three, Day One

It was a brutal first two rounds, and my nightmares are still haunted by the spine-chilling sounds of crunching steel and the hot spray of ejected crankcase oil. Now we're at round three, down to 16 survivors. Let's take on the first four match-ups from our "Sweet Sixteen."

Let's recap how the end of Round Two shook out:

For the Zombies, the Garner-approved Olds 442 won by a decisive 72.4%. In a rare win for youth over age, the 2002 Firebird Trans Am took it with 61.7% for the Rod Ragers. For the Classics, a very unsurprising win for the Shelby (64.8%). Finally, the Hemi Dart bullseye'd the Mach 1, by a close 56.8%.

Today, we have some great match-ups. Let's scrutinize:

Zombies: 1970 AMC AMX vs. 1972 Plymouth Road Runner. Okay, I'll admit to a bit of bias for this one. I really want to see the AMC win. It's going to be tough, since the Road Runner is a pretty worthy adversary. I have a feeling this one will be close, but I'll be saying a silent prayer for the car from Kenosha.

Rod Rage: 1987 Buick GNX vs. 1970 Boss 302 Mustang. This is another tough one– both cars have strong cult followings, and are both capable performers. I think this one could go either way, so, I guess we'll find out, won't we?

Classics: We've got one other non-big three contestant here, but I don't think it's going to last: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro vs. 1950 Hudson Hornet. It's the Ur-muscle car against one of the icons of the genre.

Drag Queens: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona vs. 1970 Plymouth Superbird. This one's like a Civil War battle, pitting Mopar brother against brother. These cars are very close, down to the absurdly huge wing and grafted-on nosecones. I have no idea how this one'll end up.

Alright! Let's vote!
