Today, we showed Subaru’s new racing livery for its rally cars. It’s a nice look that draws from the old “comet” livery, and keeps the general color scheme of the legendary old “555" cars named after Subaru’s old cigarette company sponsor. That led one reader to throw out a juicy, nerdy fact about Subaru.


Today’s nerdy Subaru factoid comes from a reader named Andrew, and it’s about the legendary Impreza 22B:


Indeed, type the number 555—which was the name of Subaru’s sponsor, a British cigarette company that wasn’t allowed to be on the sides of the cars in all races due to legal issues with advertising cigs—into Google, the all-knowing internet search engine, and you find:

I always thought the 22B was referring to the fact that it had a 2.2L engine compared to the normal STI 2.0L.

When I looked it up, it seems the origin of the name is ‘up for debate’.
