The Carpocalypse strikes again. Out of Kalamazoo, MI comes news Checker Motors, producers of the iconic Checker Cab, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The company stopped making cabs 25 years ago now, but still builds stampings and assemblies for the not so big three and last Friday filed for Chapter 11 protection. The decision comes on mounting pressure from rising raw material prices and the failure to negotiate wage concessions with its union. Under Chapter 11, the company can now reorganize operations to cut expenses and attempt to streamline its operations. Maybe they should also take the chance to build a new taxi half as bitchin' as the original Checker Cab. [via AutoNews Sub. Req.]
