Based on accounts from a few of the UK's top motoring journalists, a career in writing about cars involves initial debasement, then — two or so decades later — a recasting of the entire experience in wry self-deprecation. A love of cars and writing doesn't hurt either, though apparently getting shot at is wholly unnecessary.
