A Pre-Top Gear Richard Hammond Explains What Beige Is

You've probably heard about beige cars on Jalopnik, cars that were not necessarily painted beige. What's the deal with that? Well, Richard Hammond is here to explain.

This clip is from before The Hamster was on Top Gear, when he worked for some British show which happened to be called MotorWeek. I don't know if the show was inspired by the singular brilliance of John "I'm John Davis" Davis, but the whole thing wasn't awful.

Here we see Hammond driving a Daihatsu Sirion, which is the kind of car you never hear about in America because Evo Magazine never bothered testing one. Hammond finds that Daihatsu didn't focus the Sirion to be good at any one thing. It just compromised everywhere, and for that he rightly derides is as beige.

Hopefully this spectacular example of blandness explains exactly what 'beige' means.

MotorWeek Theater is our showcase of some of our favorite classic reviews from public television's finest motoring program and in this case some random old British car show. How does this video only have 52 views on YouTube? It's got that guy from Top Gear in it!
