People want crossovers and SUVs. That’s no longer just an American thing; in the first half of 2023, market share for utility vehicles exceeded 50 percent in Europe for the first time ever, and it’s the same in China. Car enthusiasts love to hate on the things, which I think is usually pretty misguided anyway, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that most normal crossovers and SUVs are, well, boring.
The Los Angeles Auto Show kicked off this week, and basically every new model that was unveiled is some sort of crossover or SUV. That’s not exactly surprising, so why is it especially noteworthy? Nearly every single one is actually pretty interesting, and that’s a good thing for customers and the industry as a whole.
If people are going to be buying these things anyway, don’t you want them to be actually compelling from a design and/or engineering standpoint? I certainly do. Whether you like them or not, it’s important that we have crossovers that are actually cool and desirable, and the number that fit that bill is higher than ever. Take a look through this slideshow to see all the most interesting cars from the LA auto show, and let me know which one is your favorite in the comments.
