The Jalopnik audience had a lot to say about the crappy cars you’ve all driven. There are many cars on this list that objectively belong here, and some that surprised me. The comments were flooded with recession-era American cars, back when interiors were made from recycled toothbrush handles and cars had handling characteristics that would give a Boston Whaler a run for its money. There were also a good amount of imports, from Germany to Japan, and some classic cars that left bad impressions that lasted decades.

Expectations lead to disappointments, so I try to go into most situations and most cars without any expectations. But it’s hard when all you see are headlines gushing over a particular new model or your YouTube suggestions are overflowing with clickbait thumbnails with word art telling you it’s the best car in the world. Sometimes the seat of your pants and the palms of your hands read a different story when you take a test drive or worse, once you’ve bought a new car.

Learning from the mistakes y’all documented in your answers, I will always make sure to take thorough test drives when looking at buying a new car. Drives that let me experience broken pavement, crosswinds, and acceleration runs to make sure that I’m not buying a car that actually belongs on a rental lot or in a crusher. From Fords to Ferraris, these are the cars that shocked you the most with their horrible drive qualities.

I have had every rental car you can imagine over the years, but there was only one that I had to return because it was so bad: the Chevy HHR. Visibility was so bad, I did not feel safe driving it.

Back in 2014 I was stuck with a Jeep Compass rental as a complimentary “upgrade” from the original subcompact I booked at National. To this day I have never driven a more miserable machine.

The 2 liter four-banger and CVT made for an absolutely awful drivetrain that buzzed and protested anytime I came near the throttle, and when I did request full power the drone of the engine consumed the cabin. Even unladen, acceleration was so dismal I struggled to merge onto highways even with long downhill onramps.

The suspension and chassis had to have been made of plastic. At the slightest bump the entire car felt like it was shuddering and skittering through an intersection, inspiring no confidence even at low speeds. As a kid I drove Power Wheels with better vehicle dynamics.

Under braking, the whole car would pitch forward with an alarming amount of nosedive, like the car was twice as heavy as its spec sheet would suggest. Compounded with the awful suspension tuning, I was weaving under braking just to keep the car in a straight line, and the brake pedal was spongy at best. I’ve driven Subarus on track with overheated, faded brakes that felt more predictable.

The thing is, I could have chalked any of these up to wear & tear, customer abuse, and poor maintenance and would have expected that of a rental car. Except I distinctly remember the odometer reading *465 miles* as I was leaving the rental lot.

Absolutely miserable machine to drive. The non-driving parts of the car were equally terrible, but that’s a rant for another QOTD.

Nissan Versa

Hands down was my friend’s girlfriend’s Nissan Versa. I know it’s a cheap car, but I have never driven a shittier car than that. Everything about it was unpleasant. Uncomfortable seats. Terribly harsh and stiff ride while also being uncommunicative to the driver. Miserably loud and drony. Cornering was a chore because the wheel just had no feedback so it felt like driving a big sailboat where any input on the wheel took a good 5 seconds to feel like it actually made it to the front wheels. Tossed around like a cork in a hurricane by wind and passing semi traffic, woefully underpowered when saddled with 4 adults. And in the end, because you had to romp on the gas all the time to get anywhere you got pretty bad mpg for such a small car. My wife had a Civic of a similar vintage and it was just miles better in every conceivable way.

1967 Ford Mustang

Early ‘90s and I have the opportunity to purchase a ‘67 Mustang two-door hardtop with a 289 and a four-speed. This was the sweet-spot for first-gen Mustang values, between the time they were just another used car and a collector’s item.

I took the car out for a test drive and.... meh.

I think I was expecting the Mustang to just this side of a race car, but it was no where near as quick as I thought it would be, the handling was no better than the ‘73 Ventura i had as my first car, and the seating position was horrible - the slouched position I had to assume hurt my back and my head still brushed against the headliner.

Lee Iacocca obviously never intended the Mustang for this overfed 6'4" Jersey boy.

Worst of all, women didn’t swoon in spontaneous orgasm as i drove by. Not a one.

I passed on buying the ‘Stang back then and have turned down at least two other opportunities to own one since

Remember the Dodge Nitro?

I had a brand new Dodge Nitro rental while my first gen Cadillac SRX was getting repaired after getting hit.

The SRX was weird, but had a screaming V8, magneride, and a decent interior. The Nitro was the worst new vehicle I’ve ever been in. It was hideous, loud, slow, uncomfortable, handled poorly, and didn’t stop well. Comparing the interior materials to Little Tykes toys would be an insult to Little Tykes.

I present to you the GWagen 4x4 Squared:

A friend borrowed this from Mercedes last year to review for his Youtube channel and we spent the day driving around in it, going to lunch, parking next to Range Rovers at Harbor Freight to embarrass them etc.

I’m a big/tall guy, not starting 5 NBA but I would blend in on most NFL defensive lines. There is no graceful way in and out of this vehicle. It is so tall that you have to climb up into it like you’re climbing a tree, and you have to jump out of it to get down. By the third jarring free fall landing exiting this vehicle I realized that I hated its impracticality. It would be impossible for all but the tallest or most flamboyant to daily drive.

If absurdity is the point, this vehicle is for you.

Saturn Ion for the win. I was so happy my rental was rear ended on the first day I had it. Just altogether awful quality and dynamics.

Runner-up: Chevy Corsica. Nasty.

It’s so goddamn slow.

You hope it’s you, but it’s not. It’s the car.

If I wanted amazing handling but not actually go anywhere, I would have just played Initial D at an arcade.

Rented an SLC300 as a fun weekend car for a trip to a buddy’s wedding. It was cramped, rattled like a Yugo, leaked water, and drove like a farm tractor. Removed my desire to ever ride in one again.

Perhaps I built this car up too much in my head, but the Mercedes AMG GT53 sedan felt surprisingly dull and detached. I wrote a little more about it on my IG but basically the car was too firm, the throttle and steering felt weird, the fake engine noises were hilarious - it just felt so cumbersome compared to something like a Panamera which does a good job of hiding its size.

Audi A3

Image for article titled These Are The Cars That Shocked You With Their Horrible Drive Quality

Having owned a few really good front-wheel drive hatchbacks, I was shocked at how horrible the handling was on the A3 even with the S-Line package. My 2004 Mazda 3 with Mazdaspeed suspsension and hotchkis sway bars was admittedly not stock, but it was one of the best handling cars I’ve driven to this day. My bone stock R55 JCW Mini wasn’t too far behind and my bone stock Focus ST was just a smidge off that.

But when I bought a 2011 Audi A3 I was severely let down. I think one could (probably correctly) argue that the A3 is a different target consumer than those other cars, but the amount of understeer on that thing was unnerving. Throw in the body roll and incredibly unsupportive seats and it just wasn’t an enjoyable driving experience.

Dodge Caliber

Dodge Caliber, got a rental for a trip to Nova Scotia. As a owner of multiple Neon’s at the time, I was excited to try its replacement. I realize the Neon was not a great car, but it was cheap fun. I was so disappointed with every aspect of the Caliber. The hatch couldn’t hold more than two carry on luggage, my poor in laws had to hold theirs on their lap (in the already small rear passenger seats) for the ride to the rental. Driving around the BEAUTIFUL Cabot Trail should have been a joy, but the Caliber was so slow, handled like a boat on rough seas, and was utterly gutless. Someday I hope to return and drive a great car around one of the most beautiful places I’ve been.

Late-2010s Subaru WRX auto.

I took it in on trade and needed a car for the night so though why not, I was curious how it would be. It was the worst car I’ve ever driven. The CVT starts changing its ratio at the same time the turbo kicks in, so you have a huge jolt forward that’s really difficult to deal with, especially when you’re behind someone at a light. It’s even worse in the sport mode, like it’s trying to act like a car with big turbo lag but the turbo kicks in at normal speeds, so when you start off at a light and there’s someone in front of you you need to be really careful not to scream into their back end.

Ferrari 348 GTS

Ferrari 348 GTS. My college girlfriend’s dad had one. His interest in cars were completely speculative, investment only. He did very well actually, from what I was told years later. Anyway, He bought one new, let us take it out for a weekend as a thank you to something I did for him or his daughter, I don’t remember. Anyway, it was glorious for a short while, weather was nice, roof was off, and that wonderful feeling of driving something so special. Then the passenger window started acting up, that was the first thing. When it started raining, we put a roof back on, which creaked like hell, and leaked from the leading edge, which my girlfriend had to continuously wipe off. Then the coolant temp started to creep towards red, and that was around when the AC packed up. By the time we go to the cottage that her family owned, we were, or at least I was, so stressed out that we rested for an hour or two, and drove it back to the garage. It started to misfire near the garage, too. We parked it between a Testarossa and a Mondial (I did tell him that the Mondial was a bad idea). It broke my Ferrari dream. It was terrible.

The Toyota Tacoma, I really wanted one with a stick in that amazing Blue color. I finally found it, was all set to go home with it until I drove it. What a giant piece of garbage they are. I can not for the life of me get why folks want these. They look great and I was all bought into the idea. But good gravy it was a hunk of junk. Slow, small inside, uncomfortable, tech was from a time that Boyz II Men was top of the Billboard charts. Just was bad.

The kicker was my young daughter was in it with me for the test drive, she started to cry and said “Daddy I don’t like this car”
