Many of you all, like me, grew up laughing at Geos. A Geo! we’d say. Ha!
But it’s worth revisiting. Geo—and I know this is going to be hard to hear so take a minute if you need to—was good.
The Prizm GSi (Toyota Corolla) was sweet. It offered a howling 4AGE in a sedan or five-door hatchback layout. That car still has an avid fanbase for good reason.
The Storm (Isuzu Impulse) was cool. It could be a hatchback coupe thing or a little wagon shooting brake. Neat.
The Tracker (Suzuki Sidekick) ruled. The whole scene of tiny offroaders that aren’t Jeeps has left America behind, to great shame.
The Metro (Suzuki Swift) convertible was neat, and the Metro itself was better than time remembers. If you think that these cars are only for hypermiling, drive one. Drive it hard. Thrash the shit out of it. There’s basically no weight (they’re sub-2,000 pounds) and you’re pretty much in a superlight Suzuki with a more Captain Planet-approved badge..
Man, I can remember so vividly my junior high school history teacher coming in in his Geo, and even he himself making fun of it. Everybody would laugh, but we were all laughing with him. There was no point to making fun of someone for having a Geo.
I never thought I’d say it but, Geo: good.
