Take a look at Matt Panic’s 1973 Toyota. Under the hood is Toyota’s famed BEAMS engine from the 2000s, the last evolution of a long line of little twin-cam four-cylinders. What makes Mark’s interesting is that it has so much intake noise it sounds like it could ingest a nearby horse.
Of course, that is not really all that interesting in the world of old Toyota drift cars. There are plenty of people who swap BEAMS engines into old cars and stick independent throttle bodies on them.
But those cars are always Corollas.
Matt’s is a Celica.
This alone makes the car impossibly cool, but Matt drives the living hell out of his car, bashing doors with the fellow oldtimers of the Shadynasty team up in the PNW.
See the car shred with Hoonigan, then get jealous of Matt’s tablet in place of a gauge cluster, then get jealous of his engine set up, then get jealous some more as he goes sideways.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to call this America’s coolest drift car, and even counting the RA28 Celica that ran in D1GP back when, Matt’s may be one of the best-realized vintage drift cars in the world.
