Aston Martin's Submarine Will Have Carbon Fiber All Over The Interior Because Of Course It Will

Submarines are the coolest thing ever, until you realize using one means you’ll be hundreds of yards deep as a small pocket of air in a large, unrelenting body of water—inescapable if something, you know, goes wrong. With that cheery thought in mind, Aston Martin now has a production version of its submarine.

That submarine also has a “mix of hand-stitched leather and high-performance carbon fibre” on the interior, because you’re not truly rich unless there’s carbon fiber on everything you own—even the underwater vehicles.

Forget the carbon fiber, though. You’re still in shock at that first part.

“Aston Martin? A submarine?” you whisper to yourself, hoping no one realizes you’re reading those car blogs at work again. After the shock wears off, another thought, perhaps a comment, comes to mind: “Why is this on Jalopnik?”

Let’s not stray too far from the point here. You clicked it.

But yes, Aston Martin has its own submarine—a submersible, actually, which is different from a submarine in that a submarine has the ability to leave and come back to the port under its own power. By definition, a submersible is more limited in power supply and needs a ship to launch and recover it once out on the water.

Aston Martin’s submersible is a joint effort with submersible company Triton called Project Neptune, and it’s done with the design phase. It’ll be shown off publicly later this year, apparently with the ability to hold two passengers and a pilot with 360-degree visibility, dive 500 meters under the surface, and have a sprint speed of more than 5 knots. (That’s about 547 yards deep and 6 mph.)

We’ve known about the project since last year, when Aston showed renderings of it. A release said the submersible will be be “exclusive” and “strictly-limited edition,” because you have to work the egos of people wealthy enough for this, with all of the “all the performance, beauty and elegance” of an Aston Martin.

Yep, this thing is definitely an Aston Martin. Only a select few automakers talk about themselves so gloriously.

There will be three base design choices on the submersible, and, if buyers still have money left over, Aston will personalize the vehicle like the company does for its cars. After all, the expansive and all-important fish audience will surely be impressed by how well the carbon fiber meshes with the leather choices of these brave and adventurous Aston buyers.

What a way to encourage the fish to stay in schools and reach their monetary goals. Bravo, Aston Martin.
