Some time in late January 2014, in the middle of a blizzard, I was driving over the old Kosciuszko Bridge in my Saturn Ion when someone clipped me from behind, my car turned sideways, and I ran head first into a wall. No one was hurt, but my car was totaled. I blame the snow, not the bridge, but, still, fuck that bridge. Yesterday, I’m happy to report, what’s left of it was destroyed.
It was, it’s fair to say, an objectively bad bridge, a necessity for drivers trying to go as quickly as possible (or not, as the traffic dictated) from Queens to Brooklyn and back again, but one that was rusty and antiquated, and very steep up and down, which, I think, contributed to the seemingly endless traffic jam that existed on it (the new one is lower). It was also very bumpy, with seemingly its only redeeming quality being the view of the city once you reached the top.
Its replacement has been in the works for a long time, and it finally became operational earlier this year. All of which meant that the old one, finally, could go. The main span was removed in July and reportedly taken to New Jersey, where it will be dismantled and recycled, which left the approaches, which were were gloriously destroyed Sunday morning.
Fuck that bridge.
