Chevy just released the performance specs for the new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, and it seems that their very back-to-basics plan — add power, remove weight — is working, with the car shedding 390 pounds and going from zero to 60 MPH in four seconds. Those numbers are for the 455 HP 6.2-liter V8 SS model (on 20-in. RF4 tires) with an automatic.
Changing your own gears adds a 0.3 second penalty for being a thinking, feeling, gear-changing human instead of some cold, calculating, gear-swapping robot.
For the V6, you can get to 60 in 5.1 seconds with the auto, 5.2 with the stick, and that trend reverses with the turbo’d 2.0-liter 4, which goes to a mile-a-minute in 5.4 seconds with the stick and 5.5 with the slushbox.
Chevy says they spent “9 million hours of computational time” on their bank of Commodore 64s (sources say) to make the Camaro stiffer and lighter. They succeeded, and as a result they now have a modular architecture approach that specifically tailors the chassis to each Camaro model. Here, look:
The V8 will also pull 0.97Gs of cornering grip and do the quarter mile in 12.3 seconds, both of which are impressive numbers. Chevy also offers this fun fact in their press release:
FAST FACT: The 2016 Camaro 2.0L Turbo’s 275 horsepower rating matches the output of the 1993-1995 Camaro Z28’s 5.7L V-8 – and offers comparable acceleration performance.
That 2.0-liter turbo four is less than half the size of the 90s-era and gives comparable, much more efficient performance — lessons have been learned.
Specific sick burnout numbers are not yet available, but computer models suggest bitchin’ levels in the high 69s.
Here’s a chart of the full specs, including quarter mile times:
2016 Camaro | 0-60 mph | Quarter-Mile | Grip (max. lateral) | 60-0 mph braking (feet) |
2.0L turbo | 5.4 (man.) | 14.0 @ 100 (man.) | 0.85 g | 129 |
3.6L V-6 | 5.2 (man.) | 13.7 @ 102 (man.) | 0.89 g | 124 |
6.2L V-8 | 4.3 (man.) | 12.5 @ 115 (man.) | 0.97 g | 117 |
