I was an LA driver for over 20 years. I’ve driven down twisty Laurel Canyon road, and always enjoyed it, in all kinds of cars. I never thought to myself “Gee, what good fun this is. I’d sure like to try it backwards!” Because, surprisingly, I’m not an idiot. I’m not so sure about our Audi-driving friend here.
I mean, I get the desire to have a rear-engined car, but running a FWD (okay, okay, AWD) car like this Audi here is in no way an acceptable shortcut. Have you ever driven a rear-wheel steer vehicle, like a forklift? I have, and let me tell you, it sucks. If you’re not used to it, it’s very hard to control, which may be why our Opposite Day aficionado here almost hit a pedestrian and nearly swerved into oncoming traffic several times.
The Audi, which drove from Mulholland to Sunset Drive via Laurel Canyon all while reversing, has not yet been identified and wore only dealer plates. There was a man driving and a woman in the passenger’s seat, and a motive isn’t clear beyond being a moron or finding the absolute worst way to try and impress a date. A motorist caught some video of the reverse drive here:
Yikes. Doing stupid things with cars can be a blast, if — and this is a massive, Jupiter-sized if — you’re not putting innocent people in danger doing it. Whoever did this is dangerous idiot who’s going to ruin everything for everyone.
