There are only three McLaren F1 GTs in the world, which means there are only six of these carbon fiber mud flaps in existence. Let’s get geeky!
Take a good look at any McLaren F1 prototype, road car, GTR, LM or Long Tail, and you’ll find that none of them have any mud flaps at all. Only the GTs do.
McLaren only had to build one GT as a homologation special for the ‘97 GTRs, but they ended up making three. The 56XPGT, the Silverstone Green prototype, remained in McLaren’s hands.
The 54F1GT, the black road-going Long Tail, went to the Sultan of Brunei, only to stay hidden is some hangar for good. It has red seat and steering wheel inlays.
The 58F1GT, the final car, went to a Japanese collector wearing Burgundy paint just the ex-Rowan Atkinson F1 before getting a complete overhaul in 2007, ending up as a Black/Silver car. McLaren themselves couldn’t tell me much about its fate ever since, but they had it on their stage at the Festival of Speed nevertheless.
Carbon fiber mud flaps make race cars road legal. Fact.
