It's kind of hard to fathom how the Scion "youth" brand has been around as long as it has without some kind of sedan or crossover. Scion's about to fix the former with a new model called the iA, their first four-door ever, and it should be fun because under the skin it's really the new 2015 Mazda2. Neat!
It's been known for a while that Toyota and Mazda struck a deal for the next Yaris subcompact to use the new Mazda2's platform and engine, but it looks like the first result of that partnership will actually be this Scion sedan. Toyota of late has been partnering with other companies for cars like the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S, as well as the upcoming BMW/Supra sports car.
Autoguide reports that the Scion iA sedan will use the Mazda2 platform and its 1.5-liter SkyActiv inline four-cylinder engine. In Canada it will be badged as the Toyota Yaris sedan. The car will debut at the New York Auto Show along with the production Scion iM hatchback, which is based on the European Toyota Auris.
Here's what Scion says in a press release:
The "i" in the models' names can stand for intriguing, individual, and easy on customers' income. The "M" reflects the hatchback's modern style and multi-faceted uses. Meanwhile the "A" for the sedan denotes the accommodating trunk and the aggressive styling.
Interesting that they use "aggressive" and "accommodating" together. It's like a guy that will kick your ass at your convenience.
Maybe there's signs of life over at Scion after all.
