If it wasn't so blatant, it wouldn't be so hilarious.
Now, I should say that I love VW's World Rally Championship program. I've been following them since Sébastien Ogier was getting top ten finishes in pseudo-Polo Skoda Fabias. I root for Jari-Matti Latvala for the current championship. I desperately wish VW would offer a rally special for sale in the US.
But man are they ripping off Ken Block videos.
You remember when Kenneth Blockenstein built one of the coolest Subarus of all time, a rally-spec STI with tracks, and ripped it around in the snow.
You may also remember when VW stuck tracks on some Touaregs and ripped them around in the snow.
You remember when Ken Block got soon-to-be World Cup star Neymar and did a person versus car shootout challenge. They called it Footkhana and it might have been goofy, but it was charming.
So charming, in fact, that VW did the exact same thing with Sébastien Ogier and then-realized World Cup star Thomas Müller. Same concept, same execution, not exactly the same fresh spirit about it.
Now, VW does have original ideas. Most of them are completely hokey junk, but some are good, like when they tested a codriver to see if he could read notes while upside down in a tilt-a-whirl.
There's so much crazy shit you can do with a go anywhere, do anything rally car. VW really has no need to rip ideas off Block.
I mean, I can think up a couple ideas right off the top of my head, and I swear they're not all about a certain '73 Baja Bug of which I happen to be the owner.
