This is the 2011 Subaru STI A-Line sedan, a turbocharged parts-bin wonder that ditches a clutch pedal in favor of a torque converter and a bunch of whirling clutchpacks. No, you can't buy it here.


The A-Line is the only automatic-equipped STI that Subaru sells, and it's only sold in Japan. The model is not new — Fuji Heavy has long offered a two-pedal version of the STI for the company's home market — but the car you see here, based on the 2011 STI sedan, is. The A-spec ditches the Japanese-market STI's 2.0-liter turbo flat four in favor of a 300-hp version of the American STI's 2.5-liter turbo four; the transmission is effectively the same unit found in six-cylinder Legacy and Outback models. Front seats with less aggressive bolstering are part of the package.

Four doors, two pedals, big power. Nice, but not for us — in every sense of the phrase.

I think Mrs McMike would be on board with a WRX. Only thing, she needs a car with an auto, since she has to commute into Washington DC every day. We also need at least ONE car with an auto.

That said, I was looking at the Impreza 2.5 GT (the WRX- lite), and was shocked that it was more expensive than the WRX. I couldn't see spending MORE on a car that offered less.

We'd buy one if the price was right, and I would look forward to throwing steelies and Hakkapeliittas on it come December.
