When A Beetle Loves A Porsche-uh At The Detroit Auto Show

Sure it looks like a squashed bug, er Beetle; but the E-Bugster concept also has some very Porsche-y elements. Take, for example, those huge, chrome wheels that echo the Fuchs wheels of Porsches past.

Add to that the Carrera stripe and the low roofline, and you might think you're in the presence of a new sort of Porsche 356. Wouldn't that be swell? Perhaps.

But banish that though from your mind. This is a concept heralding the electric driveline set to power the Golf Blue E-motion, which will arrive in the U.S. market sometime in 2013.

The Golf Blue E-motion will compete for the affections of non-Joel-Johnsons against voltage eaters like the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-Miev.

The E-Bugster, like the Golf, is powered by a 114-hp (199 lb-ft) electric motor and lithium-ion battery, which weighs 700-lbs — just over one-third the weight of a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle.

Even still, the E-Bugster's chop isn't as radical as the Ragster concept's roofing chop-job was back in 2005.
