CountersteerYour true stories of good and bad things that happen in cars.

We put a lot of love and good faith in our cars, but sometimes they can’t help but shit out on us. It’s easiest if that happens at home or near a shop, but then there are always those other times where help and resources are far away.

Take wandering spirit Raphael Orlove for example. There was that time his Volkswagen Beetle broke down in Memphis and nearly got him mugged. That was not okay! At least he was near an Autozone.

What about you? What was the worst place that your car died?

We ran out of gas in a VERY bad neighborhood in New Orleans... We saw the gas station, but couldn’t get to it from where we were, so had to make a loop. We went a touch too far, and got in to a really bad part of town that that felt light years from French Quarter even though it was only two miles or so away. Houses were boarded up, street lights were out. It was not good at all.

We knew it was bad when a local woman yelled to us when we got out of the car “You better start running, and keep running.” Well, OK then!

Luckily for us, a homicide cop on his way home stopped his Crown Vic about two minutes later. He pulled up next to us, and rolled down his window. The conversation went something like this:

Him: “Get in the cruiser.”

Us: “We’re OK, we just ran out of gas.”

Him: “It wasn’t a request. Get in the car.”

Us: “We didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Listen, if you don’t get in the car now, I’m gonna have a lot more paperwork to fill out on two victims later. And, I just finished my shift and I don’t want to have to work late. GET IN THE CAR.”

He was a friendly guy, and helped out two stranded motorists that day...
