Speed costs money. Beyond that simple dictum, there are many bends and folds in the fabric of the marketplace: a Porsche 944 Turbo is as fast as its contemporary sister 911 Turbo, but costs about a third as much. Last year's speed king is this year's bargain. Dollar for dollar, what's the best deal in serious high performance today?
In the early Nineties, Nissan could do no wrong. It was on one of the epic rolls in automotive history, and a huge part of that success was the 300ZX. The Z32 coupes were a massive improvement over their dowdy predecessors and instantly became one of the most respectable high-performance cars in the world: 150-mph speed, five-second 0-to-60 time, Super-HICAS four-wheel steering. An early-Nineties 300ZX Twin Turbo in excellent shape will run about $8000 retail according to kbb.com, which has to be one of the great bargains in the current marketplace
