Last week we lost Derek Gardner, designer the six-wheel Tyrrell P34. His was an era lost to us, a time when series rules allowed for some outlandish engineering solutions to the problems of going fast and turning. The power output of a Can-Am car, like the turbocharged, flat-12 Porsche 917/10's 1,000 horsepower for example, was a truly terrifying prospect, even for a seasoned driver like the late Mark Donohue.
