Everyone loves the E30 M3. Its boxy fender flares, manic four-cylinder engine and race-bred talents make it a blast to drive even today. But can it hold its own against an M3 from the modern era?

That's what those maniacs over at XCAR decided to find out. And their competition for the 1980s favorite isn't just any old E92 M3, it's an M3 GTS, the limited edition, bright orange track monster that's probably the most vicious M3 ever made.

Even though the V8-powered M3 GTS has some 300 horsepower on its grandfather, this is actually a valid comparison when you think about it. Unlike the cars that followed, the original M3 was essentially a street legal race car, one created and sold for racing homologation purposes.

The GTS is made in the same spirit. It's built for racing, and that's why it includes a roll bar, six point harnesses, a fire extinguisher and no rear seats. These two Ms may have been built two decades apart, but they were both born for the track.

However, "more" doesn't always mean "better." You'll have to watch and see which car XCAR's Alex Goy prefers, but it won't come as that much of a surprise to the faithful.
