Around these parts, we're big fans of Toyota's rear-drive hatchback hero, the AE86. We're equally partial to the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, the hachiroku's modern day comeback. But how would they stack up when pitted against one another today?

Recently, our friends across the pond at Auto Express sought to find out by comparing the original AE86 to their market's version of the Toyobaru: the Toyota GT 86. The result is this video, where the two cars are raced back to back to see just how much they have in common.

What they discovered is that the similarities are more than just marketing hype. "The GT 86 really does have the genes of the AE86, and that's what makes it so great," reviewer Owen Mildenhall tells us. In addition, the Reagan-era hatchback still has decent chops on the track, owing more to its balance and 2,100-pound curb weight than its 123-horsepower engine.
