When it comes to thunderstorms around an airport, it's better to have a line of storms move through, versus scattered storms. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International recently received the latter. Watch as planes slalom their way between cells, or go into holding patterns to wait for landing clearance.
Why is it better to have a line of storms, versus scattered storms? Because a line usually moves through in 30 minutes or so, while scattered storms can linger for hours. Lingering storms cause multiple closures and re-openings of the ramp, where ground handlers have to retreat inside once lightning is detected within three miles of the airport.
