The Bonneville Salt Flats are gearhead heaven. Whatever you're driving, you can push it to the limits on the seemingly endless expanse of dry lakebed. Surrounded by distant mountains, driving out there feels like being in an arena.

Located an hour and a half west of Salt Lake City, Utah and a full day's drive from California, events at the Salt Flats attract speed freaks from around the country and around the world a few times per year. The most famous is Speed Week, a mid-August hoonfest where competitors attempt to slay standing land speed records.

Driving on salt is different from driving on pavement. I tried it once, and I highly recommend it. My one word of advice is this: Bring lots of quarters. It takes forever to wash all of the salt gum off of your car after a run on the Flats.
