Winter rallies pose another challenge that you may not think of: everything is white. Driving into the sun is bad enough. Driving into the sun surrounded by blindingly white snow is a whole 'nother problem. Watch World Rally Championship driver Andreas Mikkelsen do it right.
Welcome to Onboard of the Week, a feature where we spend that pesky time between race weekends looking at awesome footage from inside the car.
Dusty Ventures sent this one over with the explanation of "Formula Drift drivers wished they spent that much time sideways." Oh, boy. Yes yes yes yes yes, please.
This is from Rally Sweden onboard the Mikkelsen's Volkswagen. He would have won the entire rally if he hadn't hit a snowbank during the last stage.
Mikkelsen corners slower than he would be on a non-snowy, non-icy stage, sure, but he's going more sideways to make up for it. Who likes sideways? I like sideways.
Around the seven minute mark, the stage opens up into a nice series of jumps. Mikkelsen also goes through several higher-speed gentle bends that are taken in graceful drifts.
He's an expert at tossing this little VW around, that's for sure. Enjoy.
