Cobo Center might be a mess in some other ways during auto-show season, but there's no denying the magic that happens to put the actual show together. It takes more than 600 electricians, miles of cable and enough power to light up a small city to get the auto show up and running.

The auto show kicks off in January, but electricians and other skilled workers begin plotting out everything in October — from lighting to rotating displays to the plugs for all the espresso machines at the Volvo and Fiat stands.

The work doesn't end after construction is complete. Electricians stay on hand throughout the show, which opens to the public on Saturday.
