Originally reported as an active shooting, yesterday's incident at the U.S. Capitol came to a tragic end after police shot and killed an unarmed woman believed to have mental health issues. A Capitol Police officer was also injured in a car crash, which can be seen on this amateur video.
In it, we see the police Crown Victoria collide violently with barricades along Constitution Avenue NW after traveling at high speeds during the pursuit. At first glance, it looks like a less-than-stellar example of police driving.
But when you slow the video down it appears as though someone raised the barricade right as the car was crossing the intersection. You can see them continue to go up after the crash. The officer driving the car doesn't seem to be at fault here.
It's pretty nasty. The good news is that while two officers in the car were hurt, their injuries do not appear to be serious. The Washington Post says one of the officers was treated and released at an area hospital.
Unfortunately, Miriam Carey, the 34-year-old dental hygienist from Connecticut who police say was the driver of the Infiniti coupe that led police on the chase, was not so lucky.
