Giorgetto Giugiaro's pen is the reason the Mk1 Volkswagen Rabbit/Golf and Scirocco appear to have stopped time. This past May, VW bought the design house Giugiaro founded, Italdesign, and can now have anything Giugiaro it wants, including another 13-foot-long hatchback.
Actually, VW folded Italdesign into its Lamborghini Holding subsidiary, so it's still technically an Italian design firm, per piacere. The VW/Giugiaro Go! does transmit a bit of the sci-fi style that was the hallmark of Giugiaro design in the 1970s, but ultimately it's a showcase vehicle, sporting VW's Blue-e-motion EV tech and riding on VW's new modular transverse chassis architecture (MQB= Modularer Quer-Baukasten), which will find its way under the automaker's vast line in the coming years.
Will we see another Giugiaro-designed Golf? In some form, predictably so.
