We know Volkswagen can build a winning WRC car out of the Polo. We also know the Beetle works well at rallycross. It’s time for the Golf to join the motorsport party.
VW’s new race car is built to TCR touring car specifications. It’s a production-based racer with 330 hp, front-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG gearbox. It comes with 18-inch rims, a 15-inch widebody, a front splitter and a massive rear wing made of carbon fiber. Plus, all the FIA safety stuff, of course.
Volkswagen Motorsport took a peak at Seat’s Leon Cup Racer for inspiration and wants to sell the resulting race car to privateer teams from the 2016 season onwards.
The TCR Golf will be developed further in action at the remaining four race weekends in the international TCR series by Liqui Moly Team Engstler, who will run two cars at the eighth round at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
If you can, go there and check it out, because Spielberg is a truly stunning race track.
Looks cosy!
