Volkswagen Gets Competitive: New Products Aim for Japan

AutoWeek is reporting today of an all-out product assault by Volkswagen, which will increase the brand's product line by several new models in key, competitive areas by decade's end. For one, a car-based, small SUV, dubbed the Beduin, will address a competitive gap through which Toyota, Honda (and soon Land Rover — with a revamped Freelander) have cruised to sales success. A new, unit-body pickup, likely based on the Touareg platform, will attempt to erode the share of market Honda's Freelander is predicted to enjoy. Will the company be able to build its way out of a sales crunch? Can VW get back sales lost to Toyota and Honda? Will its use of odd constructions of familiar-sounding words to name its cars continue unabated? Stay tuned for, oh, five years or so.
