Volkswagen's Microbus could be making a comeback according to comments made by Volkswagen's design chief Klaus Bischoff this week at the LA Auto Show.
Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's design chief told AutoExpress this week that
"I would not be doing my job at Volkswagen properly if I was not thinking of bringing back the Camper"
Confirming that plans for a Volkswagen concept are in the works, Bischoff also revealed that the 2001 Microbus concept was not put into production because of cost concerns. He said that looking forward towards the next concept
"The key question is 'what sort of car should we build?' It could be a traditional MPV, with a conventional interior, or we could be much bolder, designing a more flexible, versatile machine - perhaps one that is closer in spirit to the original model. It is not yet decided."
My unsolicited advice to Volkswagen is to forget crash standards and just start making a slightly updated version of the pre 1968 Bus, maybe with a little, a lot more power? In lieu of that pipe dream, one can only hope Bischoff keeps the original in mind as much as possible in the design process.
