Vince Vaughn has issued a statement about the removal of an extended gay joke from the trailer of his new move, The Dilemma. That's right, "a statement," not "an apology." Via Deadline, here it is:
Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop.
Those gay people! Always trying to divide us, by asking not to be the butt of jokes. Don't they know that making jokes about gay people breaks tension? What, do gay people want us all to be tense, all the time, worried about what other people are thinking and how they might be judging us? Don't they know that gay jokes bring us all together? If you don't believe me, find some gay people and recite the monologue from The Dilemma to them—I can't think of anything that would bring you, and gay people, together more quickly.
