Car-SUV crossover vehicles like the RAV4, Acura MDX, and Nissan Murano are grabbing an increasing portion of new car sales, according to Power Information Network. The lighter and better-handling vehicles, 31 of which are now on the market, now comprise 11 percent of new car sales, compared to near goose-egg proportion in 1998.

A quick glance out my window lends real-world credibility to the story: Four RAV4s, two Toyota Highlanders, and one Nissan Murano. That's just half a block in one NY suburb.

Full disclosure: One of those RAVs is mine.
