In this excellent vintage footage, the layout of the Nürburgring is explained via F1 car. Equally amazing is how slow these F1 cars look today and how dangerous it must have been driving one.
Back in my day, we didn't have race tracks that connected in rings or ovals, we drove out to a point and back. That's part of what made us men. The leader had to position his way through the other competitors head-on while holding off the second-place car. Men died, we lost quite a few good ones, but they couldn't hack it, so they didn't make it. Not like these pansies today you see racing. Not a single one would have made it back then.
Did I mention we raced regardless of weather?
