Engine geeks, don your tinfoil chapeaus. Among developers working on the camless-engine future, Valeo may be the first out of the box. The French company reports it's working with several unnamed global automakers (whispers: Peugeot) to pursue its engine construct, which uses electronic actuators, not a rotating camshaft, to open and close valves. The thinking is, such systems would increase engine efficiency by 15% to 20%, though not everyone is sold on the promise. Right now, the company's demo only actuates the intake valves, but that system offers 80% of the benefit, according to AutoWeek. Looks like this could become the badge that replaces VVT. And what about hot-rodding lingo of the future? "Hot software-based valve actuation parameters" doesn't quite have the ring of "hot cam."
