2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe: Perhaps 577 HP Will Change Your Mind

Even though I like the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE, their replacement for the venerable ML-Class, I'll admit that it's not the most, uh, classically beautiful thing on four wheels. You know what helps me get past those looks? A twin-turbo V8 good for 577 horsepower. That'll do, pig.

That's the motor the GLE gets when it suits up for AMG duty, along with a name that fits into the new "Mercedes-AMG" thing they've got going on lately. Just like the Mercedes-AMG GT.

The GLE doesn't have that car's newer 4.0-liter twin turbo V8, but rather one of AMG's older 5.5-liter mills. It puts out 577 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed gearbox. It can make the zero to 60 mph run in just 4.2 seconds. Yeah, that'll get your garbage kids to soccer practice on time.

The GLE63 S Coupe bows at the Detroit Auto Show this week. Expect to see more then.

Update: This story incorrectly said the GLE63 S gets the newer 4.0-liter AMG twin-turbo V8. It doesn't, so the text has been fixed. Sorry! (And I'm not even drinking at the Detroit parties like my colleagues!)
