This Is Why I Need A Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car

Everyone has needs. Water, food, shelter, the occasional hug...and a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Yeah, that’s a need. Let the Mauro Motorsports 997 GT3 Cup demonstrate why that’s been added to my short list of needs: this rear-engined rocketship just passes everything with ease.

Welcome to Onboard of the Week, a feature where we spend that pesky time between races looking at awesome footage from inside the car.

John Mauro recently picked up this ex-Level 5/Kelly-Moss Porsche 997 Cup car, which he shares with Michael Gerowitz for NASA Time Trials. It looks very similar to this one, but was actually a different car, as this was a back-up car that was sold to a Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA West team before Mauro bought it. Anyway, here’s some of Gerowitz’s time behind the wheel at The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

This car not only blew by nearly everything it met on track, but it also crushed the TT1 class record for Mid-Ohio in the first session of the day with a 1:34.6 lap time. (Several other TT1 cars broke the record as the day went on, including a 911 Turbo later in the day that claimed the record for the day, so Porsche for the win.)

Crank up the speakers. Bask in the glory of that wonderful flat-six punctuated by rapid-fire shifts.
