How do you move a fleet of 48-tonne trucks to the top of a 6,500-foot mountain with no roads? With cables, of course.
That's what the consortium Groupement Marti Implenia is doing at Nant de Drance, in the Swiss Alps. They needed these Astra HD8 480hp 8x6 trucks to build a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant at the summit. The only problem is that the only way to reach the peak is by helicopter or using a heavy duty cable crane. They opted for the latter.
The pumped-storage plant will generate 600 megawatts of electricity. It will be built inside the mountain at 5,577 feet above sea level. Workers will be able to reach the plant through a 3.5-mile tunnel (5.6 km). Hopefully, the company will also build hot jacuzzis on the top for them.
