For reasons I cannot understand, someone this weekend paid a whopping $1.1 million for the "Eleanor" Ford Mustang from Nicolas Cage's Gone In 60 Seconds. It's not that I don't like that movie, I just think the kit is a bit overcooked and overrated. However, someone else paid $1.3 million for a far more tasteful 'Stang.
That would be this one-of-a-kind 1967 Shelby GT Super Snake, which Mustangs Daily reports went to a new home following the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis for $1.3 million. That made it "easily" the highest grossing car at the show and the most expensive Ford Mustang ever sold, according to their records. Damn.
What makes this Mustang so special? Besides its one-off status, there's the fact that under its hood lies a 427 cubic inch V8 lifted directly from a race car you may or may not have heard of called the Ford GT40. I know, right?
Mustangs Daily says 50 were supposed to have been made, but with the then-sky high price tag of $8,000 — about $54,000 today — meant little interest from potential buyers. Sounds like a bargain to me, considering that really high-end Mustangs can go for that much or more today.
Still, this Super Snake is an an incredible machine, and I hope it makes its new owner very, very happy.
