Should this car get the restomod treatment next?

It seems like everyone and their mum is working on a restomod these days. You’ve got people working on old Volvos, engineers modernizing old Alfas and all kinds of clever people working out how to turn classic muscle cars into EVs. We’re truly living through the restomod golden age.

But just because loads of people are already restoring classic cars, doesn’t mean there isn’t space for one more to sneak onto the market. So if you could, which classic motor would you inflict the restomod treatment on?

That’s exactly the question we posed to you earlier this week. Thankfully, you came back with some great answers. So sit back, relax and flick through our gallery of the cars that you think need the restomod treatment next. Did we miss a great pick? let us know in the comments section below.

“Late C3 Corvettes - fantastic looking hot garbage. Built in decent numbers, so you likely won’t get too much pushback on improving a few.”

We can argue all day about what is the worst Corvette, but this is the right answer for which one needs the restomod treatment.

AMC Eagle Wagon

“The Javelins is a ‘good’ idea, but this is better…

“It’s a wagon, it’s AWD, and look at that two-tone paint. Don’t go completely bonkers, but drop in a 2.3 EcoBoost at 300 HP and you have a nice little sleeper.”

This is a rogue choice, for sure. But if you can find a few hundred people happy to shell out $100,000 for a modded up Eagle, you might have yourself a business.

Sunbeam Tiger

“The Sunbeam Tiger! I know it’s heresy to tamper with that which Shelby hath wrought, but imagine this thing with current-day suspension, a modern powertrain, and safety measures other than skill and prayer.”

Just a few simple tweaks would make this car an absolute dream. Good choice.

“Imagine this - Ford build a new ‘car’ instead of an SUV - give us a new small car with plenty of power - give me a new Escort.”

I’d love to see this, who do we call at Ford to make it happen?

AMC Javelin

“The 1st gen AMC Javelin.

“You want to point to a car with fantastically clean styling yet has been nearly forgotten, that’s the ‘68-’70 Javelin. Put a 5.7 Hemi under the hood, bigger rims (but not wagon wheel rims), a kickass sound system and you’ve got a winner.

“And if you’re looking to convert a car to EV, the Javelin would be right up there for me.”

Would you rather have an electric Javelin or an EV-swapped Javelin? Answers on a postcard, please.

“Porsche 944 but with a turbocharged K24.

“Fiat X1/9 but with F20.

“Porsche 914 but with properly sorted EJ motor.”

Three very good picks there, but I think I’ll take the 944 please!

Cadillac Fleetwood

“My first thought is a 1961-69 Lincoln Continental, but that’s already been done, sometimes better than others.

“My personal choice would be the 1993-96 Cadillac Fleetwood, Cadillac’s last body-on-frame RWD sedan.”

You can have this, as long as it plays “Time” every time you fire it up, OK?

Saab Sonett

“I’ll keep it simple: Saab. The entire brand needs a restomod, especially the Pre-GM era cars. Favorite picks would be the Saab Sonett and Saab 900 Turbo.”

Just bring back Saab but only selling restored vintage models. That would be the perfect car company, I think.

Dodge Polara

Dodge Polara

A photo of a white Dodge Polara.
Photo: Dodge

“Any land yacht; make it electric. But specifically for me, the 1969 Dodge Polara or Lincoln Continental. With a frunk and a trunk, you’d have more cargo volume than a Cybertruck. Make it a convertible and put the top down, you have more cargo volume than any electric truck made today. There’s no better form factor for a battery sled than a wide, long, and low land yacht.”

I love the term “land yacht,” I feel like it encapsulates exactly what I want out of car.

“Late-3rd gen Chevy Caprice. Peak 80's land yacht, but if you see one that hasn’t been driven into the ground, they’re really rather handsome cars. On top of that, they were GREAT to drive (that’s why police departments and cab companies clung to them for so long).

“We have to do something before they all get turned into donks.”

Another vote for the land yachts!

Mercedes 300 SL

Mercedes 300 SL

“As you can see I’ve done this properly, a Mercedes 300 SL. Doesn’t even have to be the Gullwing, roadster works just fine. Leave the body as is untouched, but with updated suspension, brakes, a little bit wider rear tires, direct injection (because I want it to work), maybe a tiny tiny bit bump in power, a nice exhaust system.

“This is a car that makes you feel like you’ve arrived before you even leave...Just look at Grandma right there, yea that’s her coupe! she’d be very disappointed in her Crossover loving Great grandchildren.”

This could set the record for the most expensive restomod ever, surely?

“Citroën GSA, it’s like a mini CX, glides on hydropneumatic spheres and desperately needs a smooth powerful engine. A 13B swapped GS or GSA with decent infotainment system, well chosen tires and a stretch goal of AC.”

Not enough people suggest Citroëns in Question of the Day, and that’s a real shame.

None Of Them

None Of Them

A photo of a blue Acura Integra Type S sedan.

“None of them. If you want a modern car, buy a damned modern car and leave the classics the way they were intended to be.

“At most, period go-faster mods ala my Spitfire. Not yet another LS swap, slammed suspension and wagon wheels with rubber-band tires.”
