Land Rover's replacement for the Discovery, an SUV that explored the depths of asset depreciation and overall suckiness with the guileless enthusiasm of Lenny from "Of Mice and Men," has been touted as an improvement of meterological proportions over its predecessor. Despite, or perhaps because of, its slabsided minimalism (on the LR3, the Los Angeles Times's Dan Neil wrote, "I wonder how many children have flagged down a white LR3 in an attempt to buy ice cream?") and initial kind words from critics, the new mid-range model has won a kind of halo from the enthusiast community — possibly out of surprise that Land Rover could make such a vast quality improvement under Ford's aegis. But is that perception the Truth? Farago has the real story.
