This week, Robert Farago turns away from all the current cost-structure talk about GM's pension liabilities and union-contract obligations, and looks into its corporate culture. The shift comes on the retirement occasion of Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill. Hill, if you'll recall, was the genius who — given carte blanche by the folks at Cadillac — created the Allante, a decent, Italian-designed roadster that cost more to build than a Seawolf Class submarine. Vice Chair Bob Lutz recalls that Hill was a difficult sort who bucked the GM culture and succeeded (with the Corvette, at least) in spite of it. What that says about GM from the inside out is the subject of something Farago calls GM Death Watch.
