Ford's turnkey Cobra Jet drag racer switched to the smaller 5.0-liter V8 last year but kept the giant supercharger for max power, even if a supercharger doesn't exactly conjure up images of jet turbines. Ford's rectified this with a pair of turbochargers borrowed from the Focus ST of all places.
Because the NHRA requires stock classes to use equipment derived from production vehicles, Ford had Borg-Warner whip up turbochargers patterned on the Focus ST. Does that make it an EcoBoost Cobra Jet? Right now they're calling this a "concept" but it's definitely the future of the Cobra Jet program.
They've also used the car to show off the new Ford Racing livery, which now features asymmetric black and blue striping over the top and swops along the side.
Now if only we could get the 5.0-liter V8 with turbos in the Focus ST. You could paint it Hello Kitty Pink and we'd still drive the bow off it.
