As many drivers know, reverse is the car gear that lets you drive backwards. That’s a fact. But different manual transmissions have different locations for reverse! Which way is the right way?
My old Subaru WRX five-speed had reverse to the right and down, where sixth gear would be on a six-speed. That was nice because you were really unlikely to shift into reverse by accident or mistake it for a forward gear. Conversely, this E30 I just picked up on Craigslist—more on that soon!—has reverse all the way to the left and up.
I like all the way to the left and up. It’s far enough away that you probably won’t go into that instead of first. But is it the best location for reverse?
